Controls System Technician

Florida Institute of Technology is currently searching for a Controls System Technician for the Facilities department. This is a full-time position. 

Duties primarily consist of replacing, maintaining, updating, repairing and ensuring proper operation of all HVAC controls related hardware and software. Monitoring the entire system, related network, remote nodes, and diagnosing any problems as they occur. Retrieving alarms, notifying proper personnel, creating service requests. Making any necessary repairs to keep all systems online and operating properly to resume proper operation and monitoring as required. Perform all HVAC scheduling and requests by inputting them via BAS software to ensure all events, classes and meetings have proper air conditioning to keep all attendees comfortable. Assume duties of Automated Building System Engineer when absent. Working hours are Monday - Friday 8:00am - 430pm with overtime. 

Prior experience in commercial HVAC and/or Building Automation, Basic understanding of control logic, Knowledge in DDC control theory and applications pertaining to HVAC/Control a must. Proficient computer use, an IT background is a plus.



Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Establishing and maintaining quality of network connectivity for all HVAC systems on campus. 

  • Examining HVAC alarms and alerts which occurred after-hours, determine necessary actions to remedy problems. Accomplish the solution or assign to a tech accordingly determined by the Automated Building Systems Engineer (ABSE).

  • Create daily backups for the HVAC software database and related critical files. Verify the integrity of the backups and files. Correct any problems with backups or files.

  • Receive Work-Orders and process them according to priority, determined with ABSE. Diagnosing more technical and difficult issues which ABSE responds to

  • Maintaining and recording list of stock parts needed to repair common problems in the field. Secure supply of stock parts accordingly.

  • Receiving requests and using scheduling software to schedule HVAC systems to operate for all campus events/classes/meetings.

  • Updating and maintaining software and hardware necessary to accomplish any tasks we are assigned. (Server, Laptops, Desktop computers, and all peripherals).

  • Receive after-hours calls for any controls related issues which may occur. Solve some issues remotely from home via the controls software, otherwise arrive on site and physically resolve the problems.

  • Assisting HVAC techs with many problems as they relate to our controls systems. 

  • Build/create/change and maintain graphics, logic, and all aspects of our software as necessary.

  • Build/create/change and maintain digital documents and physical documents used by our team to assist us in our daily tasks.

  • Hurricane preparedness and cleanup.

  • Additional Duties as assigned

Education/Skills required:

  • 2-3 years of Informational Technology related experience and continuous training.
  • 10 hour OSHA certification (preferred) 
  • Valid State of Florida driver's license and maintain a good driving record as defined by FIT insurance guidelines

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to stand or walk for extended periods of time, bending, and stooping
  • Ability to work at heights, climb/walk up and down stairs/ladders
  • Must be able to lift up to 20 pounds on a frequent basis and up to 50 pounds on an occasional basis
  • Ability to perform repetitious work and to reach overhead
  • Must be able to work in extreme climatic conditions
